The Most Badass Destruction Sequences On Film

These days it’s starting to feel like summer blockbuster season is dedicated exclusively to Hollywood finding new ways to show the most famous cities in the world getting destroyed in the most expensive ways possible (and, if you’re lucky, in 3D). What once was a rare cause of excitement for an audience’s inner destructive 10-year-old is now a full season at the movies.



A few weeks ago, we got to see Superman level Metropolis, and now today, director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) pits giant monsters against giant robots (finally!) in a city-stomping global battle royale that will demolish most of the planet.



Unlike the increasingly nauseating toy commercial/film franchise Transformers, it’s actually an incredibly entertaining movie that should remind viewers that you’re never too old to enjoy the sight of a monster blowing up a city in slow motion.



With that in mind, we thought we’d present a list of our five favorite instances of famous cities and landmarks being destroyed for our collective entertainment (we’re sticking to movies involving monsters, aliens and robots over natural disasters this time in honor of Guillermo’s smash 'em up). There are, of course, many more examples than these five, but should you stumble out of Pacific Rim over the weekend anxious to see more cities go boom, here are five worthy places to start.
