Last week, we got our first look at the red-band trailer for Spike Lee’s remake of the Korean cult hit Oldboy. It looks like Lee and his American cast, which includes Josh Brolin and Samuel L. Jackson, are playing it safe and giving us a fairly straightforward remake of Park Chan-wook's creepy masterpiece.
In this instance, that’s probably the smart move. Detractors and film purists have been up in arms since an American version of Oldboy was announced and will have their claws sharpened should it falter in the slightest. That skepticism seems well-earned in an era of constant, and often subpar, remakes. But it’s easy to forget that some remakes go above and beyond, transforming their source material into something fresh and original. So let’s give Oldboy the benefit of the doubt by going back and checking out 10 of the greatest movie remakes of all time.
Note: we’ve deliberately excluded franchises, like Batman, which can be endlessly rebooted.
